Looking for a list of additives you might want to stay away from, here is the best list we have seen on the internet so far http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm At Food Safety/Food Additives.  The FDA helps produce a Codex that list all of the chemicals that can be used and at what levels.  This book was in its sixth publication in 2006 and is still not in print that we can find.

A second and longer source of food additives is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_food_additives which includes the proper name, the function and the Codex http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_food_additives,_Codex_Alimentarius and the E number http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_number.  If you don’t know what something is you may want to look it up since the FDA approves more than we may want to put in our mouths or of our children.

A general discussion on fodd additives can be found here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_additive

The IFIC http://www.ific.org/nutrition/ingredients/index.cfm provides more information on the behavior of the FDA and food additives.

And according to the FDA this is a complete list of additives that can be incorporated into our food in the United States all with the associate Doc type Doc Number and Reg Number http://www.foodsafety.gov/~dms/eafus.html  and here is their food additive status list http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/opa-appa.html.
